The cheating Russians weren't playing just any old machine — they played only on the Aristocrat Mark VI, an oldish pokie manufactured in Australia. And they did more than just press play. After each one cent play, the gamblers would enter the pokie.
- This story starts with a member's inquiry written to our society, Casino Surveillance & Security Society. The member is a surveillance manager of a casino in Northern Cyprus, actually he is reporting that a friend of his, another surveillance manager in Romania has discovered two Russians cheating on a Novomatic, MegaJacks, slot machine.'Do any of you guys have an information about these 2 people??' is what he asks. Facial images are provided. This was in July 2011.
Two weeks later another member answers with a positive on one of the Russians together with an Estonian and lists another six Russians as cheating on Novomatic Games Dolphin's Pearl and on Lucky Lady's Charm which is (info from another operation). No device is seen to be used.
Almost one year later a surveillance manager from one of the largest casinos in Greece has at this moment in time our main Russian subject plus two more and another Russian who had visited earlier that same afternoon, the names and facial images are provided.
All of this information is automatically sent to our members in the U.S. All across Europe it emerges on the grapevine that Russians are cheating on Novomatic and an Australian company Aristocrat slot machines.
Over the next couple of years bits and pieces of information coming in from all over Europe starts to mount up and the list of Russians grows longer.
Initially their modus operandi was that they always carried a gentleman's shoulder bag with them, which they would place between their thighs and with one hand on the slot machine and the other hand inside the bag they would play. On one occasion they were apprehended but they managed to swipe clean the app. which they had on their phone, five phones in all were inside the bag. They were taken into custody at one time by the casino's own security in Greece but were released due to lack of evidence and escorted from the premises without cashing out their TITO tickets. Later it emerged that they were video recording the slot’s reels over a period of about twenty minutes, they would leave the casino and return at a later time or date. They would hold their camera phones in front of the machine and record the sequence of the reels.
It was presumed that the video recordings were being transmitted back to Saint Petersburg in Russia, because that city is where most of them came from, where there was a large server which was analysing the data. It was also rumoured that more and more makes of machines were being so called hacked. We now have Novomatic, Aristocrat and Atronic machines all being given special attention to by surveillance directors across Europe. They were operating now not only in Europe but the USA and Macau,China. Later they would also become active in Latin and South America and now today in Russia itself.
On the 3rd of June 2014 a group of three Russians led by the main subject Murat Bliev were observed in a casino in Missouri U.S.A. and on this occasion they had the same type of gentlemen’s bag with them but this time their right hand was kept in their pocket and playing the game with their left hand. They had played Aristocrat mark VI and mostly been put under observation while it was being determined what their method of cheating was. As in what had happened in Europe they had not been arrested either and had simply been allowed to leave the casino after leaving a paper trail through various machines in order to try to hide the nature of their winnings.
Later in July the same year Bliev led another group of Russians into California, arriving at Los Angeles International airport (LAX) they were reported apparently by Homeland Security, who called a casino surveillance director and said 'The Russians are coming' who in turn informed the director of surveillance at the Pechanga Casino Resort, as one of them, Bliev, had booked a reservation at a nearby hotel. Pechanga were on alert and ready and waiting for his visit. When he arrived he duly went directly to play on the Aristocrat mark VI slot machine. The surveillance director studied his unusual play and decided to inform the Department of Justice (DOJ) a DOJ officer arrived and arrested him. However because of lack of real evidence, since they do not actually touch the machine or manipulate the slots, he was set free.
Fortunately they kept a hold of his phones as evidence, while he returned on the next available flight to Russia. Meanwhile the FBI who were interested in this case, requested to have the phones sent on to them for analysis.

Finally a break-through in this scam was when Bliev returned to the U.S.A. later in December that year 2014, along with three other Russians, Lavrenov, Gudalov and Nazarov, the latter being a U.S. citizen, who is resident in Miami and this was their point of entry into the USA. Nazarov had sought asylum in the U.S. from Kazakhstan because of his Jewish ethnicity. However on making their way back to Missouri, where they had previously great success, they were this time arrested at the Lumiere Place Casino, St.Louis.
Bliev, Lavrenko and Gudalov were sentenced to two years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit fraud on slot machines, while it would appear that Nazarov made a plea bargain and helped the FBI with their enquiry. It was discovered that an app. on their phones named “Severin” was used to relay the recorded reel spins back to St.Petersburg which in turn would signal the Russian slot cheats when to place maximum bets on the outcome of subsequent spins.
In Singapore on the 8th of May 2016 four more Russians a Czech man and a Filipino woman were arrested by police for cheating slot machines in the Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa Casinos. Sixteen mobile phones, a lap top and cash worth S$ 125,000 were seized, Vladislav Logachev already known in our society & FINGER and Andrei Egorov and their wives and a previously unknown Czech, Radoslav Skubnik and an unnamed Filipino woman were charged with cheating at play. Skubnik was sentenced to 22 months while the two Russian males received 45 months and 30 months respectively, the three women were released.
While it is estimated that the Russian gang is between 25 to 30 strong, other nationalities have either joined the group or are operating the same scam alone. Germans of Russian origin, Montenegrins, Macedonians and just recently a Bulgarian man was observed and arrested on the Iberian peninsula for conducting the same cheating practice on EGT machines.
Soon after I received a report that a Russian man had been apprehended in a casino in Russia, also cheating on an EGT machine, this time his mobile phone was concealed in a sewn-up shirt pocket while he was recording the slot machine play.
(Observe left how security discovered his phone.)
Today I have received information that two men and a woman of Romanian nationality along with a French man have been discovered extracting money from EGT slot machines in Romania using the same methods.

Since there are hundreds of thousands of these slot machine types of the named manufactures models in casinos world-wide, is it impossible for them to be recalled.

As more and more nationalities are drawn to this and the widespread reporting of this cheating method is growing, my question is, how do we stop it. If the Americans and Chinese cotton on to this we cannot target everyone and it was only a matter of time when they would begin to conceal their phones, it is increasingly difficult for casino surveillance to keep track of this.
